Animal Welfare Statement

Quite simply, our horses are part of our family and their comfort is of paramount importance. When we talk about our horses the stories often sound like they're about family members rather than animals. I have fond memories of all the horses who have pulled the carriages over the past 30 years, with touching stories passed down for those who were born before us.
We adhere to the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead Council regulations as a Licensed Hackney Carriage Operator.
This requires the following key activities are completed annually:

  • Horses vetted for general health and soundness to work.

  • Carriage and Harness safety assessments.

We also have our own Windsor Carriages Hackney Carriage regulations and operating processes built from experience over the past thirty years in which all coachmen and grooms are trained. These ensure the best possible welfare for the horses, maintenance of the carriages and equipment and preservation of our traditions. Visits to our private stables are welcomed by arrangement should you wish to understand more about our longstanding business and stable management and I would be pleased to answer any questions about the operation of Windsor Carriages.

Extreme Weather Policy

Hot Weather

While heat may not be considered extreme in the UK, caution is taken when we experience a prolonged period of abnormally hot weather. Under these conditions both horses and humans are at risk of collapse from heat exhaustion, so in this situation, consideration and care is taken and tours will be cancelled where needed.

What happens to the horses when they cannot pull the carriage anymore?

The horses are retired long before they are unable to do their job. However it is light work and they do enjoy it. Our oldest pair worked for over 27 years on The Long Walk and our summer evening drives were created just for them. A 30 to 60 minute drive and then back to the stables.

When we see that they need a change or to semi retire we find loving homes either private or at dedicated retirement livery locations for them. Our oldest boy is currently on long term loan, enjoying life in Costa Del Camberley, Surrey, in his new role as beloved family pet. Windsor Carriages continues to pay for his yearly medical, teeth, blood checks and any extortionate vet bills. Thats our commitment.  It's also one of the reasons I have had to increase tour pricing since my father died.  I have had to fund the pension plan for our older horses, who we can all agree have deserved it and plan for the future of our new horses.
