Frogmore Mausoleum, Windsor

Can you visit Frogmore Mausoleum?

Set quietly within Windsor Home Park, Frogmore Mausoleum is one of the most private and emotionally resonant sites on the Windsor estate. Created as a personal memorial by Queen Victoria for her beloved husband Prince Albert, it sits far from the bustle of Windsor town, surrounded by parkland shaped by centuries of royal use.

Although the Mausoleum has been closed to the public for many years, it remains a place visitors are deeply curious about, and one that can still be meaningfully understood and viewed from within the estate on a properly hosted private visit.

What is Frogmore Mausoleum?

The Royal Mausoleum at Frogmore was commissioned by Queen Victoria following Prince Albert’s death in 1861. Construction began the following year, and the building was designed as a deeply personal space of remembrance rather than a public monument.

Frogmore itself had long been used by the royal family as a retreat from court life, chosen for its privacy, gardens, and quiet separation from ceremonial Windsor. The Mausoleum reflects this spirit. It was never intended as a visitor attraction.

Who is buried at Frogmore Mausoleum?

Frogmore Mausoleum is the final resting place of only two people:

  • Queen Victoria (1819–1901)

  • Prince Albert (1819–1861)

They are the sole interments within the Mausoleum itself.

This is often confused with the nearby Royal Burial Ground at Frogmore, which is a separate site containing graves of other members of the extended royal family. The two locations serve different purposes and should not be conflated.

Why is Frogmore Mausoleum closed?

Frogmore Mausoleum has been closed to the public since 2007 due to concerns about the condition of the building. Over time, water ingress and structural issues required significant conservation work to protect both the fabric of the building and its interior decoration.

Restoration and conservation have been ongoing, reflecting the Mausoleum’s status as a working part of the royal estate rather than a managed visitor site.

Can you visit Frogmore Mausoleum?

There is no public access inside Frogmore Mausoleum, and it does not form part of standard Windsor Castle or Frogmore House visiting routes. However, the Mausoleum can be viewed from The Long Walk, depending on estate routes and conditions, and is often included in the wider understanding of the estate landscape on a properly planned private visit.

Is Frogmore included in a Windsor Castle ticket?
No. It is not part of the standard Windsor Castle visitor route.
