Windsor Carriages is the continuation of Windsor's historic horse-drawn Hackney Carriage trade, formally traced through generations of Windsor coachmen since 1849.
For generations, our role was straightforward: carrying visitors through Windsor by horse-drawn carriage.
Today, the horse and carriage remain at the heart of what we do, but the way we share this tradition has evolved.
We privately host carriage experiences as part of visits and events throughout Windsor, working alongside expert guides, chauffeurs, hotels, travel advisors and event professionals to ensure the carriage becomes a seamless part of your time here.
For two guests, that might mean a privately hosted day incorporating Windsor Castle and time by carriage on the Windsor Estate.
For a family, it might mean creating a day that works beautifully across three generations.
For an international company or event planner, it might mean welcoming a group of up to 96 guests, with smaller parties experiencing the carriages alongside other privately arranged Windsor activities.
And during Royal Ascot, it can mean one of Britain's great traditional arrivals: travelling to the races by horse-drawn carriage.
We don't offer a menu of standard tours.
Instead, we begin with a conversation about why you are coming to Windsor, who you are bringing and what you hope to experience.
From there, we help bring the pieces together.
Can I book a private horse-drawn carriage in Windsor?
Yes, as part of a privately hosted Windsor visit or event.
We no longer offer standalone carriage rides or operate a public taxi rank.
Our horses and carriages are brought into Windsor especially for our guests, with time allowed for the journey, hospitality, photographs and, importantly, meeting your horse and coachman.
For private guests, the carriage becomes one chapter of a wider Windsor day rather than a journey booked by duration.

What is a private Windsor carriage experience?
It is time to experience Windsor at the pace of the horse.
Rather than following a fixed tour route, our carriage experiences take place within a living royal landscape where routes and access are subject to Estate activity, permissions and conditions on the day.
We allow time to meet your horse and coachman, hear the stories and traditions associated with Windsor's historic carriage trade, pause for hospitality and take photographs.
The experience is privately hosted and unhurried. There isn't another carriage ride waiting behind you.
Can I book just the horse and carriage?
No. Standalone carriage rides are no longer a service we offer.
The carriage forms part of a privately coordinated Windsor visit or event.
There is a practical reason for this.
Windsor is a working royal town and Estate. Access, activity, weather and the natural requirements of working with horses can influence where and when the carriage experience is best enjoyed.
By coordinating the carriage within the wider visit, thoughtful adjustments can be made behind the scenes without disrupting your day.
Do we have to use your chauffeur?
For our private visits onto the Windsor Estate, chauffeur arrangements form part of the experience.
Some of the locations used during our visits are not accessible to the public by car, and carriage meeting points can vary according to activity on the Estate.
Your chauffeur therefore allows us to bring you to the appropriate location and adapt your movements where required.
For Royal Ascot arrivals, corporate visits and events, the arrangements can be different.
If you already have a chauffeur, hotel car, minibus or coach, we can work with your existing transport provider and liaise with them over the relevant timings and meeting arrangements.
Can you collect us from our hotel?
Yes.
Private chauffeur collection can form part of your Windsor visit, whether you are staying locally, at one of the surrounding country-house hotels or in London.
Your Windsor visit does not necessarily need to begin and end in the same place.
If you are checking out of one hotel and travelling onwards afterwards, your luggage can travel with your chauffeur while you enjoy Windsor before continuing to your next destination.
Can you collect us in London?
Yes.
For privately hosted Windsor visits, chauffeur collection from London can be incorporated into the arrangements.
This can also work particularly well when Windsor forms part of a journey between hotels or destinations rather than being treated as a separate day trip.
We have luggage. Can you store it for us?
Yes.
Many of our international guests visit Windsor as part of a wider British itinerary.
Your luggage can travel securely with your chauffeur and continue with you to your onward destination, or appropriate storage can be arranged while you enjoy Windsor.
There is no need to return to where your day began simply to collect your bags.
May we bring our dog?
Yes.
Dogs are welcome in our chauffeur vehicles and carriage.
As dogs are not permitted inside Windsor Castle and may not be able to accompany you into some restaurants, your host can look after your loved one while you dine or visit the Castle.
We can arrange a walk, water and somewhere comfortable to rest before reuniting you afterwards.
It means your dog can remain part of your Windsor day without limiting what you are able to experience.
How long is the carriage experience?
For private visits, we generally allow around two hours for the carriage chapter of the day.
This isn't simply time spent travelling.
We deliberately allow time for hospitality, photographs and meeting your horse and coachman.
The exact route and journey will vary according to the Estate and activity on the day.
Can we choose our carriage route?
We can't promise fixed routes.
The Windsor Estate is a living and working landscape and access can change according to Estate, ceremonial and operational activity.
Our experienced carriage team selects the most appropriate route available for your visit.
This allows us to share the best of Windsor on the day rather than promising a particular road or view that may subsequently become unavailable.
Is the Long Walk guaranteed?
No.
The Long Walk forms part of a working royal landscape and access is subject to permission, Estate activity, ceremonial requirements and conditions on the day.
If we believe significant changes in Windsor town or closures on the Estate would compromise the exceptional experience we have promised, we will discuss this with you. Where appropriate, we may recommend rescheduling your visit or offer a refund rather than deliver an experience that falls short of the standard we expect.
We are enormously proud that our guests so often describe their day with us as a highlight of their UK visit. That reputation comes from a simple principle we have held for generations: the horses, our team and the experience of our guests come before simply completing a booking.
Is hospitality included?
Yes.
Hospitality forms part of our privately hosted carriage experiences and is included as standard.
We serve Windsor Estate sparkling wine alongside alcohol-free Fortnum & Mason sparkling tea. For guests who prefer a completely alcohol-free experience, the wine can be replaced with apple juice from the Sandringham Estate.
Hospitality is served beneath the oaks in high-quality reusable glassware rather than disposable cups, in keeping with our sustainability objectives and the care we take when spending time within this historic landscape.
If you wish, your glassware can be taken home with you as a small memento of your time in Windsor.
It is a moment deliberately left unhurried: time to pause beneath the trees, enjoy the Estate, meet your horse and coachman and take photographs before continuing your day.
Please let us know about any dietary requirements or preferences when planning your visit and we will be very happy to accommodate them.
Will we have time to meet the horse?
Always.
Our horses are not brought into Windsor to complete journey after journey.
We deliberately operate at a gentler pace, allowing guests time with their horse and coachman and an opportunity to understand something of the tradition they are experiencing.
For many of our guests, those quiet moments with the horse become one of their favourite memories of Windsor.
What happens if it rains?
We are accustomed to British weather.
Our carriages have full weather protection for your comfort, with umbrellas and blankets provided as standard.
The team can also make thoughtful adjustments to the day where conditions require it.
Horse welfare and safety will always come first.
What happens if it is very hot?
Again, the horses come first.
Seasonal conditions are considered when planning each visit and, where appropriate, we favour cooler parts of the day for the carriage.
Because the carriage forms part of a wider coordinated visit rather than a fixed time slot, other elements of your day can be planned around the needs of the horses.
Our guests' experience matters enormously to us, but never at their expense.
Is a private guide included?
Yes.
For our privately hosted Windsor days, expert guiding is an important part of the experience.
Your guide does far more than accompany you through Windsor Castle.
They help connect the Castle with the wider Estate, its horses, traditions, landscape and people, sharing the stories and details that allow you to understand Windsor rather than simply see it.
They also work alongside your host, chauffeur and carriage team throughout the day.
It is one of the reasons our guests so often tell us that Windsor became their favourite destination during their time in Britain.
Can you arrange Windsor Castle for us?
Yes.
Windsor Castle can be incorporated into your privately hosted day, together with expert guiding.
If you have already purchased Windsor Castle tickets, simply tell us when enquiring.
Where ticket conditions and availability permit, we can work with your existing arrangements and assist with adjusting entry timings if necessary so that your Castle visit fits more naturally into the wider day.
Do we need to arrange lunch ourselves?
No. We take care of that,
If you already have somewhere you particularly want to dine, we are very happy to work around that preference. Otherwise, we love to recommend somewhere based upon you, the occasion and the atmosphere of the day.
That might mean a favourite country pub, a picnic in the carriage, somewhere elegant for a leisurely lunch or simply somewhere that fits beautifully with the way your Windsor visit is unfolding.
What else can we experience in Windsor?
We work across Windsor with trusted local providers and can incorporate experiences throughout the town and Estate, from the river and local brewery to gardens, hospitality and privately guided visits.
Rather than beginning with a list of attractions, we prefer to understand the ambitions for your visit.
What interests you? Why are you coming to Windsor? Who are you travelling with? Is this your first visit or somewhere you already love?
From there, the wider visit can be curated around you.
Can you work with our travel advisor, DMC or event planner?
Absolutely.
We regularly work alongside travel advisors, DMCs, hotel concierges, family offices and event planners bringing guests to Windsor.
If you already have trusted chauffeurs, guides or transport arrangements in place, we are very happy to work with them.
Our role is to ensure the carriage chapter fits seamlessly within the wider visit or event, liaising with your team where necessary over timings and arrangements.
For guests who would like us to take care of the wider Windsor day, we work with our event and experience partner, Treadgold Brock, to bring the different elements together.
This gives our guests and professional partners flexibility: we can become one exceptional chapter within an itinerary you are already creating, or help coordinate the Windsor visit in its entirety.
Why do you sometimes arrange the whole Windsor visit?
Because the horse and carriage can no longer operate in isolation.
Windsor is a living royal town and working Estate. Routes, access, weather, ceremonial activity and the natural rhythm of working with horses can all influence the best time and place for the carriage chapter of your visit.
Coordinating the wider day gives us the flexibility to make thoughtful adjustments where required while protecting the experience you came to Windsor to enjoy.
You shouldn't need to concern yourself with what is happening behind the scenes.

Can you arrange a horse-drawn carriage arrival at Royal Ascot?
Yes.
Travelling to Royal Ascot by horse-drawn carriage remains one of the great traditional ways to arrive at the races.
Our Royal Ascot carriage experiences are privately arranged and incorporate the horses, carriages and professional carriage team together with hospitality and the chauffeur coordination required around your arrival.
If you already have private transport arranged, we can liaise with your chauffeur or driver so that the different parts of your journey work seamlessly together.
Can you arrange carriages for corporate groups and events?
Yes.
We work with companies, event planners, DMCs and international groups wishing to incorporate Windsor's carriage tradition into a wider programme.
This can range from a single carriage chapter to larger Windsor events incorporating multiple carriages, venue hire and other privately arranged activities.
How many guests can you accommodate?
From an intimate private visit for two to events for up to 96 guests.
For couples, families and small parties, the visit can be planned entirely around your group.
For larger corporate, incentive and private groups, guests can experience the carriages in smaller parties alongside other Windsor activities arranged as part of the wider event.
It means even a large Windsor event can retain the personal character of the carriage experience.
Can you provide several horse-drawn carriages?
Yes, subject to availability and the requirements of the event.
We can advise on the most appropriate carriage arrangements once we understand your guest numbers and what you would like to achieve.
Horse welfare, suitability and the quality of the guest experience always determine what we recommend.
We are arriving by coach. Can you work with our coach company?
Yes.
For group visits and events, we can work alongside your existing coach or transport provider.
Our team liaises with the relevant drivers over the arrangements required for the Windsor elements of your programme, allowing guest movements to work seamlessly around the wider day.
Can I hire a horse-drawn carriage for my own event or venue?
Potentially, yes.
Private events are considered individually according to the occasion, location, access and suitability for our horses and carriages.
Rather than offering carriage hire simply by the hour, we will discuss what you would like to create and advise on what is both appropriate and possible.
Can you arrange professional photography?
Yes.
Professional photography can be incorporated discreetly into private visits, celebrations and events.
It allows you to enjoy your Windsor experience while someone else quietly captures it.
Are children welcome?
Absolutely.
Privately hosted Windsor visits can work particularly well for families because the pace and different elements of the day can be planned around your party.

Can you accommodate older guests or mobility requirements?
Yes, although suitability will depend upon the individual guest and carriage.
Please tell us about any mobility or accessibility requirements when enquiring.
This allows us to consider the most appropriate carriage, transport and wider itinerary for your party rather than making assumptions about what will work for you.
How far in advance should we enquire?
As early as you comfortably can.
Our visits require the coordination of horses, carriages, coachmen and the wider arrangements surrounding your day, and we intentionally operate a limited number of private experiences.
Summer dates, Royal Ascot and significant dates in the Windsor calendar can require considerably more advance planning.
Last-minute visits may sometimes be possible, but are always subject to the availability of the team and necessary arrangements. We generally require at least 10 working days to make all the arrnagements.
How much does a private Windsor carriage experience cost?
Every visit is individually planned, so pricing depends upon the number of guests, horses and carriages required and the wider experience created around your time in Windsor.
Our private visits are not priced as carriage rides by duration because you are reserving the team and arrangements required for your Windsor experience rather than purchasing a seat for a particular journey.
Once we understand who is travelling, where you are staying and, most importantly, your ambitions for your time in Windsor, we can suggest how your visit might unfold and
provide an indicative price.
So what exactly am I booking?
