Scattered across the landscape of Windsor Great Park stands one of the greatest collections of ancient oak trees in Europe. Some were already old when Windsor Castle was founded. Others were standing when William the Conqueror rode through the forest on royal hunts. A handful may even have begun life before England existed as a single kingdom.

These are not simply trees. They are living witnesses to history. Today, Windsor Great Park remains home to one of the largest populations of ancient oak trees in northern Europe, with many hundreds of veteran and ancient specimens spread throughout the estate.

What Makes a Tree Ancient?

An ancient tree is not simply a large tree.

It is a tree that has reached the final stage of its natural life while continuing to support an extraordinary range of wildlife. Ancient oaks develop hollow trunks, cavities, deadwood, fungi, lichens, and countless habitats that become increasingly valuable as the tree ages.

Unlike many living things, an ancient oak often becomes more important ecologically as it grows older.

Some oak trees can live for over 1,000 years, making them among Britain's longest-living living organisms. That means some within the estate were already centuries old before Windsor Castle was built. It has survived Saxon kings, Norman conquest, civil wars, world wars, and the transformation of Britain from medieval kingdom to modern nation. Yet it continues to grow leaves each spring.

Why Windsor's Oaks Survived

The survival of these trees is not an accident. Many ancient woodlands across Britain disappeared through agriculture, industry, or development. Windsor was different. As a royal forest and later a protected royal estate, large areas remained remarkably unchanged. Ancient trees were allowed to age naturally in open grassland, developing the wide spreading crowns that have become a defining feature of the park.

This combination of protection, grazing animals, and careful stewardship has helped create a landscape that is now internationally important for both heritage and biodiversity.

Tree historian and author Julian Hight has described Windsor as one of Europe's most important landscapes for ancient oaks. His work explores how the history of Windsor can often be read through its trees. Ancient boundaries, former hunting grounds, forgotten customs, and centuries of royal stewardship remain visible to those who know where to look. The trees act as living archives.

While buildings are rebuilt and people come and go, these great oaks remain.
