St George’s Chapel Windsor | History, Visiting & The Order of the Garter
St Georges Chapel
Continuity, Ceremony and Quiet Reflection
St George’s Chapel stands within the walls of Windsor Castle as one of the finest examples of Perpendicular Gothic architecture in Britain. Founded in the 14th century and completed over generations, it remains a working chapel, not a museum, but a living place of worship and ceremony.
It is the spiritual home of the Order of the Garter, the most senior order of chivalry in Britain. Each June, the Garter Day procession moves through the Castle precincts in robes and insignia that link directly to centuries of tradition.
In recent years, the Chapel has also become a place of national reflection. It is the resting place of several sovereigns, including Her Late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, whose interment in the King George VI Memorial Chapel draws a moment of quiet pause for many visitors.
St George’s Chapel is open to visitors when services and ceremonial commitments allow. As a working chapel, access may be restricted at short notice. When open, time inside is best approached without haste. The vaulted ceilings, carved stalls and heraldic banners of the Knights of the Garter are best appreciated in stillness.
My own family’s connection to Windsor includes time spent guiding within these walls in the last century. That lived familiarity shapes how we host today, with reverence for both the history and the present function of the Chapel.
St George’s Chapel forms part of Windsor Castle, yet its significance reaches into the wider estate and town — into ceremony, worship, remembrance and continuity. When woven into a hosted day, it is experienced with context and quiet pace.
THOUGHTFULLY GUIDED & HOSTED
For some visits, this looks intimate and familial. For others, it extends to estate luncheons, team gatherings up to 96 guests, or occasions held beneath the oaks. However it takes shape, your experience is guided, coordinated, and cared for, so you can remain present, rather than managing the details.
‘Thank you for all the careful planning and patience. Our clients were absolutely delighted"
